New Delhi: India has imposed a complete transit ban on imports to the country from Pakistan, including those routed through third countries like the UAE. This follows a notification from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry dated May 2 and is being strictly imposed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence DRI.
The action was taken in the aftermath of a deadly attack by terrorists on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, when 26 lives were lost. The Indian authority believes that such indirect trade routes should be cut out from economic channels to function perfectly against people misusing them for subversive activities.
As per the sources quoted by The Indian Express, DRI has started arresting consignments showing some possible links to Pakistan whether they are directly linked to such a case or not. Pakistani-flagged vessels have also stopped docking in select Indian ports as part of the heightened vigilance.
The intensified enforcement has alarmed traders and importers, especially those heavily dependent on third-country trade routes. Many complain that they are incurring unforeseen losses because their shipments have been halted. However, government officials point out that duties beyond national security are priorities, within the framework of counterterrorism response to the broader picture of India.
